The French ship arrived at the port on a winter morning. Among the passengers was a young and very observant man. His name was Amédée-François Frézier, and he said he was just a traveler.
Pero no era verdad.
But that wasn't true.
Frézier was a military engineer. The King of France, Louis XIV, had given him a secret mission: to draw the ports and fortresses of the Spanish colonies in South America.
That is why Frézier walked everywhere with a notebook. He measured walls, counted cannons and drew the coastline. If anyone asked him questions, he smiled and talked about the weather.
One day, at the market, a woman offered him a white fruit, almost the size of an egg.
—¿Qué es esto? —preguntó Frézier.
"What is this?" Frézier asked.
—Una frutilla, señor. Pruébela.
"A strawberry, sir. Try it."
Frézier tried it. In France he knew wild strawberries, small and red. This one was huge, sweet and soft.
That night, next to his drawings of fortresses, he carefully drew a strawberry plant. The spy had found a treasure that wasn't on his list.
In 1714, before returning to France, Frézier put some live plants in flowerpots. The voyage was long. At sea, fresh water was worth more than gold, and each sailor received a small ration.
Frézier spoke with the officer in charge of the cargo:
"If you give me water for my plants, I'll give you two of them when we arrive in France."
The officer agreed. Week after week, Frézier watered his strawberries. According to most accounts, when the ship reached France, five plants were still alive.
But then came a surprise: the plants grew, but they hardly produced any fruit. Much later, botanists discovered the secret. Many Chilean strawberry plants are either male or female. Without knowing it, Frézier had brought only female plants, and without pollen from a male plant they could hardly bear fruit.
Nature found a solution. Over time, in the gardens of Europe, the Chilean strawberry crossed with a small red strawberry from North America. From that mix the modern strawberry was born: large like the Chilean one, red and fragrant like the North American one.
Frézier lived to be more than ninety and became an important engineer. But his greatest success wasn't on any secret map. It was in a flowerpot.
¿Coincidencia? Su familia decía que no.
Today, almost all the strawberries we buy have a Chilean ancestor. And there's one last detail: in French, strawberry is fraise. And the spy's last name? Frézier. A coincidence? His family said it wasn't.
